Crackdown on bars ignoring smoking ban Watch video

Open defiance of Colorado's smoking ban by bars in Colorado Springs, as an act of civil disobedience, forced the hand of police and code enforcement officers. A series of stings was conducted around Colorado Springs. Dozens of citations were issued, with one bar owner facing fines of more than $4,000.

DJ's Bar and Grill, Joe's Bar, Hilltop Lounge, and Murray Street Darts all received citations. According to police, it follows these four businesses publicizing their intent to ignore the smoking ban as an act of protest. That defiance remains, even though Bruce Hicks, owner of Murray Street Darts was hit with $4400 in fines. Hicks said he will fight the citations in court.  In the meantime, he'll continue to allow patrons to light-up.
