Sydney - An Australian who couldn't stand his wife's smoking strangled her and then had friends over for a backyard barbecue over her makeshift grave, a court in Perth was told on Thursday.

Darryl Mitchell (38) pleaded not guilty to murdering 39-year-old Debbie last March.

Mitchell is alleged to have throttled his wife before burying her naked body in the backyard.

Police also claim that a few hours later he hosted a barbecue over where her naked body lay.

Two days after Mitchell reported his wife missing, he concreted the backyard.

Police recovered the body from under the freshly poured concrete slab. - Sapa-DPA
